During a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that paying “a tiny little bit more” for fuel is a small sacrifice to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also raised the possibility of declaring the Strait of Hormuz as a U.S. territory following a hypothetical victory over Iran.
Iran has dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining its control over the strategic waterway. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reiterated Iran’s stance, stating that the blockade will persist until the U.S. acknowledges its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mentioned that Tehran has not yet decided to re-engage in talks with Washington, stipulating that shipping through the strait will not recommence unless U.S. conditions are met.
The standoff has caused significant disruptions to tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical conduit for global oil and natural gas shipments. This uncertainty has contributed to rising crude prices, subsequently increasing pressure on fuel costs. As a result, the average gasoline price in the U.S. has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase compared to the previous year. Brent crude prices have been on track for a notable weekly rise as well.
The economic ramifications extend to Iran, where President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the country’s rising inflation to the U.S. blockade, sanctions, and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has signaled potential additional financial measures against Tehran as efforts to broker a ceasefire remain stagnant.
