In a significant shift within the aviation industry, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest hub, as evidenced by passenger traffic figures from July. Istanbul Airport reported handling 8.15 million travelers during the month, outpacing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change in ranking is notably marked by a 1.5% decrease in Heathrow’s passenger numbers compared to July of the previous year, while Istanbul experienced a 2.3% increase. The downturn at Heathrow is partially attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
This development has reignited discussions regarding Heathrow’s proposed expansion, specifically its third runway project. Operating with two runways that are near their full capacity, Heathrow is advocating for the expansion, which would cost an estimated £33 billion and could potentially increase its annual passenger capacity to around 150 million. Airport officials maintain that additional capacity is crucial for bolstering the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors.
In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and continuous operations throughout the day. The airport currently utilizes three runways, with plans to introduce a fourth by the end of 2026. This operational advantage has allowed Istanbul Airport to accommodate the growing volume of passengers effectively.
Amid these developments, other UK airports have reported record-breaking numbers. London Stansted and Manchester airports both celebrated their busiest July on record, managing 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers respectively. These figures highlight a broader trend of increasing passenger numbers at key UK airports, despite the challenges faced by Heathrow.
